Pay Transparency

Pay transparency is the first step of a larger multi-faceted movement by On Our Team to remove gender and racial based pay disparity and build pay equity in the theater and entertainment industry.

To that end, On Our Team has worked to increase pay transparency within the theater industry. After On Our Team successfully waged a social media campaign and petitioned for pay transparency on the job site of the League of Chicago Theatres in 2020, the organization partnered with Costume Professionals for Wage Equity in 2021 to successfully campaigned for pay transparency on the job sites of Playbill, BroadwayWorld, Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC), and Minnesota Playlist.

Pay Transparency Campaigns

On Our Team and Costume Professionals for Wage Equity have joined forces to demand that Backstage.com require clear rates of pay on their job site.

The organizations are gathering signatures on the open letter in support of pay transparency on Backstage.com’s job site.

Before releasing the open letter, On Our Team and Costume Professionals for Wage Equity contacted the leadership of Backstage.com directly to request the change in March 2021. The request was supported by Theatre Communications Group (TCG) which sent a letter to Backstage.com supporting the call to change. Backstage.com did not respond to any of these requests for change.

OffStageJobs.com, USITT, TCG's ARTSEARCH, The League of Chicago Theatres, Playbill, SETC, Minnesota Playlist, and BroadwayWorld all require clear rates of pay on all jobs listed to their sites. Backstage.com remains one of the last industry job sites in the United States without a requirement for clear rates of pay. Meanwhile, the need for a more diverse and equitable arts industry has become more urgent and apparent than ever. On Our Team and Costume Professionals for Wage Equity are calling on Backstage.com to join the ranks in championing the arts by helping to create a more honest and equitable theatre industry.
